All-star baseball series roster includes locals

  • 0

Two in-town rivals will suit up for the same team next month for the Reser's Oregon All-Star Series in Corvallis.

Corvallis High pitcher Garrett Miller and Crescent Valley infielder Grant Mattes will take the field for the South team.

The games will match the top 5A and 6A seniors from the North, primarily the Portland metropolitan area, against their counterparts from the South.

The teams will play at single game at 6 p.m. on June 18 and a doubleheader at 2 p.m. on June 19 at Goss Stadium.

Miller has been a force on the mound this season for the Spartans with a 7-3 record, 2.47 earned run average and 73 strikeouts in 65 innings.

Mattes leads a potent Raiders offense with a .432 batting average, seven home runs, 36 RBIs and 19 stolen bases.

Taylor Burner, an outfielder from West Albany, is also on the squad. Burner hit .558 with eight homers, 42 RBIs and 16 stolen bases.

CV's Jamie Alsip and Matt Grause are alternates for the South team.

The North squad features two Oregon State signees - pitchers Jace Fry and Riley Wilkerson.

Fry is a left-handed pitcher from Southridge High School - the same as former Beaver Darwin Barney - while Wilkerson is a right-hander from West Linn High School.

Current Beaver Ryan Barnes hails from West Linn as does former Beaver Cole Gillespie.

Both Fry and Wilkerson signed national letters of intent with the program in November.

Fry has a 10-0 record for Southridge with a 1.42 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 59 innings. Offensively, is batting .488 with 14 doubles, four home runs and 38 RBI.

Wilkerson has guided West Linn to a 19-7 record, including three consecutive victories over Clackamas last weekend. In his last start, he tossed a five-hitter with five strikeouts.

The Corvallis Knights of the West Coast League organizes the event with sponsorship by Reser's Fine Foods and Nike.

This year's Goss Stadium venue is new after the series moved from The Dalles. Once known as the State-Metro All-Star Series, past players have included former major leaguers such as Dale Murphy, Mickey Lolich and Scott Brosius.
