Corvallis High School battled Churchill down to the final possession before falling 58-55 on Friday in a nonleague game at Spartan Gym.

The Spartans (4-5) had a chance to tie in the closing seconds but could not capitalize.

"We had a good look, but the shot didn't go down," CHS coach Ross Duerfeldt said.

Dyshawn Hobson had 17 points and Parker Wright eight for the Spartans, who trailed 44-37 entering the fourth quarter before rallying. They resume nonleague play against Willamette on Tuesday at CHS.

Crescent Valley 55, Hermiston 45

The Raiders played their best game since opening night and snapped a five-game losing streak by defeating Hermiston in the semifinals of the CV Invitational.

""Statistically it wasn't our best game but we worked better as a unit and the kids played well together," CV coach Mike Stair said. "Our defense gave us a lift."

AJ Sandvig led CV with 13 points; Tariq Harris and Spencer Boock added 11 and Cameron Sanders had eight to lead a balanced offense.

The Raiders (3-5) play Ashland at 4:15 p.m. Saturday. Ashland lost 50-42 to Central on Friday. CV will play Ashland instead of Central because the Raiders and Panthers meet twice during the Mid-Willamette Conference season.

Monroe 57, Vale 55

SALEM — Zach Young scored with less than 10 seconds remaining to break a tie and Monroe edged Vale at the SAC Holiday Tournament at Salem Academy.

Brian Goracke had 23 points, 10 rebounds and five assists and Young added 13 points for Monroe (6-4), which concludes tournament action on Saturday with an 8 p.m. game against Creswell.

Girls basketball

SALEM — The Monroe Dragons won their sixth game in a row by edging Valley Catholic 51-47 at the Salem Academy tournament. 

Peyton Greene had 19 points, Kailey Martin and Madison Ballard 11 each for Monroe (9-1), which concludes tournament action on Saturday.

Crescent Valley def. Ashland

The Raiders topped Ashland at the CV Invitational; game details were not available. CV (7-1) resumes action at the tournament on Saturday.

North Eugene edged The Dalles 54-50 in the other  game.
