EUGENE — Christian Fullbright was just happy to be there, and a little happier after he was on top of the awards stand when he was done.
The Santiam Christian senior posted his best mark early on and held on to win the 3A boys triple jump title Friday at the OSAA track and field state meet at Hayward Field.
Fullbright’s winning jump of 42 feet, 7½ inches came on his second of six attempts, giving his competitors plenty of chances to better it. But it never came.
“I was just fine with whatever happened because I made it to state. That’s a win” said Fullbright, who came in as the favorite with the best 3A mark of the season at 42-10, a personal best set in winning last week’s PacWest Conference district meet.
It all came together at the end of the season for Fullbright, who credited his success to strength and conditioning as well as technique work.
Fullbright was later sixth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.31 seconds.
Santiam Christian had just one other state competitor on Friday. Ryan Almen was ninth in the boys high jump at 5-8.
2A boys
Monroe’s Kendall Seitzinger was eighth in the triple jump at 37-9¼. He also ran a leg on the Dragons’ 4x100-meter relay, which was ninth in 48.01.
2A girls
Kayla Bateman of Monroe tied for fourth in the pole vault at 7-6. She also helped the Dragons take eighth in the 4x100 relay (54.34).
Teammate Sadi Sutton was ninth in the shot put (29-¼).
